How to specify a fire-rated door set

A fire door is a complete assembly, not only a leaf. A useful enquiry should identify the location, required fire resistance, wall construction, clear opening, handing, single- or double-leaf arrangement, glazing or louver requirements, finish and the complete hardware set.

Start with the opening

Record structural opening size, finished wall thickness, wall type, floor level and opening reference.

Define performance

Confirm the required fire resistance, smoke control, egress, security and environmental exposure.

Coordinate the assembly

Select leaf, frame, seals, glazing, hardware, anchors and installation details that are covered by the approved evidence.

Approve before manufacture

Review shop drawings, technical data, finish samples, hardware schedule and applicable certification.
